So recently, the guys at EA has released their new football (most commonly known as soccer to Americans) game, FIFA 14. Before the game was out, there were rumors saying that EA would introduce a new way of playing the game. It’s a new slide to play control. It’s different from the classic buttons we saw in FIFA 13.
The app is a freemium and has in-app purchases like Real Racing 3. Most wouldn’t mind but some would as you would need to fork out a bit of money to play the full potential of the game. I was disgusted that I had to pay for Kick-off mode.

The graphics of the game didn’t get any major upgrade, nor did it receive any new noticeable mechanical improvements. I would say, like the FIFA games in the PlayStation Portable, you can only expect new team managements or players.
The new controls had me scratch my chin because I had a hard time figuring how the game would work. When the game came out, I was impressed how intuitive it is. Scoring goals are now easier. It resembles the FIFA game in the PlayStation Vita where you tap the back touch panel for the player to shoot the ball. It works pretty similarly now. As you approach the goal, just tap inside the goal and the player will perform a chip shot into the goal if near enough. You can also swipe on the screen in the direction you desire to shoot the ball. Passing is much more accurate now. Just tap on the player you wish to pass to.
The part I hated the most about this game was setting up your Ultimate Team. It was a lot of hassle. The main purpose was to make sure your player perform efficiently. If you hate it like me, you could just go to match of the week and play instead.
So, I spent about an hour on the game and there are some goods and bads. Here goes, FIFA 14 is a nice update from FIFA 14 but lacks the ‘Wow’ factor for me. The graphics and mechanics are good but I was hoping for more since smartphones nowadays are so powerful. It was a little dissapointing. Another thing is, paying to play modes like Kick-off. Seriously? Kick-off is like a standard mode for ALL soccer games and you made it an in-app purchase in your new game??

But there are goods too. Mainly the new controls. I loved it. IT. WAS. FANTASTIC. It was so fluid and worked perfectly. But for those who aren’t familiar with the new controls or even dislikes it, you can always switch back to classic controls which are exactly the same as FIFA 13.
